Japanese Stab Book Binding and Hand Photography
This workshop is open to the public and provides an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to learn an ancient method of book binding Photographers will have an opportunity to focus on the intricate beauty of hands folding paper. There will be enough time for participants to make about 3 books.

The instructor, Melany Hovey, is an accomplished artist, teacher, community arts activist as well as the Executive Director of Lemon Street Gallery in Kenosha. Hovey's instruction will begin with a 20 page 5.5” x 8.5” book. Tools will be provided but it would be helpful for participants to bring a camera hammer, blunt darning needle with a large hole, scissors, binder clip, bone folder, and awl. If you have special paper you would like to use, please bring it.

There will be a $2 charge at the door for available materials.

“Keep Your Clothes On!”
Life Drawing, Painting, Photography
Older children and young adults will be modeling. The poses will be shorter and full of the unexpected excitement and emotions of the uninitiated model with many changes of clothing.
Bring your medium of choice. Images will be displayed at the “Art Blizzard Christmas Party” in December. We could use more models and encourage members to ask their grandchildren or friends if they would like to participate.

Refreshments
“Let Them Eat Cake” is our May theme. Eight members will be providing their favorite cake for all to enjoy. Coffee, teas and hot chocolate will be available. See you there!

TEN MINUTE DATE with ART

Just like the popular 10 minute dating, each artist will sit in front of a still-life and have 10 minutes to make an impression (so to speak), a bell will ring and each table of artists will move on to the next still-life. The purpose is to respond quickly, to loosen up and catch the essence of the images. This is designed to have fun while strengthening your observation skills. These drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs will be displayed at the “Winter Blizzard Christmas Party” December 2011.

PATRICIA BRIGGS, PhD.

Dr. Briggs will focus on contemporary art. Her background is in art history and she is a published arts writer and an independent curator. We are fortunate to have her in Racine. Dr. Briggs has been checking out the art scene here and in Kenosha between writing and free-lance art assignments in other states.

In response to what she's seeing in local galleries, Wustum Museum, and The Anderson Arts Center, she has been posting informal art notes on Scene Unseen and has commented on several of our members' works. Dr. Briggs is interested in establishing dialog among artists in the area though the blog and is a wonderful resource for our art community. Check out her blog.
